Some NPCs also have powerful 'telegraphed' attacks.  There will usually be a chat message that indicates what sort of attack, and the zone that the attack will cover (which might be a column away from the NPC, an aura around it, or so on) will be marked with a bunch of flaming dots - the Delayed Fireball VFX.  This is a good hint to get out of the way...

Some NPCs also have powerful 'telegraphed' attacks.
